Message of Healing

Living my life, despite what has happened to me. Knowing that I am not defined by my traumas and experiences.

I was 17. I met a guy at the mall. I had never been approached before in public and asked for my number, and I gave it to him. We talked for a few days. He said he wanted to take me out to dinner, I had also never been taken out on a proper date before, it all seemed very romantic. We agreed on a day after school, I didn’t know until quite a while after but he had lied about his age, he was not 18. He was 26. Dinner was going well, and then he asked me if I wanted to come over to his place after. I gave him a firm no, and said I wasn’t comfortable with that because I barely knew him. He seemed disappointed. The rest of the dinner was pretty quiet. I remember him a few more times throughout the night asking things along the line of “are you sure?” And “it’ll be fun” to which I reinforced my answer. I was very uncomfortable at this point and he was my ride home. I hadn’t told my parents where I was, and he had promised to take me home after dinner so I bit my tongue. We left the restaurant and I remember asking him if he needed my address again to take me home; to which he just nodded no, and began driving. It was night at this point and I couldn’t tell where we were driving. We ended up at his house and I immediately told him that I said I did not want to come over. He told me to relax, and that he just had to grab something quick and I should come inside while I wait because it was winter- and he didn’t want to leave the car running. I didn’t feel good about it, but I went inside. I stood in the front entrance for a while until he came back out from his room and told me we’d have to wait a little bit for his phone to charge so that he’d have his GPS to take me home. He told me I could wait with him in his room. He made multiple advances that I pulled away from, and told him very upfront that I didn’t want to. He kept pushing. At this point my own phone was dead, and I was really afraid. I remember to this day the feeling in my chest. I asked if he could please just take me home. He said “come on, I’ll take you home right after” And I gave in. I cried on the ride home and he said nothing. I blocked all of his contacts. This was 7 years ago. I didn’t even know until recently that I was taken advantage of and this was considered sexual assault. I was coerced into an unwanted encounter, after repeatedly saying no. I felt so ashamed. For a very long time I blamed myself, thought of all of the things I should have done instead, asked myself why I gave in. And it took me a long time to realize that it wasn’t my fault, I was just scared and wanted to go home, and I was backed into a corner. Education and SA awareness is so important. There are so many people with similar experiences that don’t know what they went through was assault, and harbour that with them. Unable to heal. It was hearing other women’s similar stories that helped me heal. I knew finally that I wasn’t alone, and it wasn’t my fault.

Grounding activity

Find a comfortable place to sit. Gently close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths - in through your nose (count to 3), out through your mouth (count of 3). Now open your eyes and look around you. Name the following out loud:

5 – things you can see (you can look within the room and out of the window)

4 – things you can feel (what is in front of you that you can touch?)

3 – things you can hear

2 – things you can smell

1 – thing you like about yourself.

Take a deep breath to end.

From where you are sitting, look around for things that have a texture or are nice or interesting to look at.

Hold an object in your hand and bring your full focus to it. Look at where shadows fall on parts of it or maybe where there are shapes that form within the object. Feel how heavy or light it is in your hand and what the surface texture feels like under your fingers (This can also be done with a pet if you have one).

Take a deep breath to end.

Ask yourself the following questions and answer them out loud:

1. Where am I?

2. What day of the week is today?

3. What is today’s date?

4. What is the current month?

5. What is the current year?

6. How old am I?

7. What season is it?

Take a deep breath to end.

Put your right hand palm down on your left shoulder. Put your left hand palm down on your right shoulder. Choose a sentence that will strengthen you. For example: “I am powerful.” Say the sentence out loud first and pat your right hand on your left shoulder, then your left hand on your right shoulder.

Alternate the patting. Do ten pats altogether, five on each side, each time repeating your sentences aloud.

Take a deep breath to end.

Cross your arms in front of you and draw them towards your chest. With your right hand, hold your left upper arm. With your left hand, hold your right upper arm. Squeeze gently, and pull your arms inwards. Hold the squeeze for a little while, finding the right amount of squeeze for you in this moment. Hold the tension and release. Then squeeze for a little while again and release. Stay like that for a moment.

Take a deep breath to end.
