Message to a Survivor
If you have experienced ANY type of unwarranted sexual harassment, assault, violence - I BELIEVE YOU. YOU ARE VALID AND YOU ARE IMPORTANT.
Message of Healing
Healing to me is about acknowledging the experiences I've had, coming to terms with the fact I never did anything to warrant them. It is about knowing that by opening up about my struggles I can help others, it is about sitting with the hard feelings when they occur but knowing they won't last but I will. It is as simple as appreciating the wind blowing the trees, my friends and I laughing over dinner, reading a book I like, hugs. Healing is lots of things and healing is possible for us all.
I was conditioned to think catcalling was a compliment, that if someone held your waist a little too long at work it was just cause "ahh they're just a bit touchy", that it's easier to just "go with it" than to say no and risk their response. It took me years to identify that no matter the degree of your experiences it still is never ok. We often get told sexual violence is one way but it isn't, it comes in many forms and sometimes you can't identify it at first - and that's ok. I am only recently coming to terms with the varying degrees of experiences I've had. I didn't want to say anything because I was made to believe I'd "rock the boat". Well some boats are meant to sink. Let's rebuild the boat so everyone can stay afloat, included and safe.
