Original story
Healing to me means that I can talk about my story shamelessly and not to find fault in myself, but find fault in the others who have done such illegal acts. I still shake when I speak about it or type about it, so the trauma is very real, but I continue forward with courage.
Between dates, 2020, I (female) was on a work trip by myself to another site in city, state for a job interview. I had taken advantage of the long weekend due to MLK day, so I could experience the new place and see if it was a fit for me. After my interview, I was feeling pretty good. At some point, I had ended up at what was called “bar” for some drinks. This has since changed its name. I had been over-served, and there was no security. After $92.63 worth of alcohol (no food), and someone giving me weed (which I don’t like), the room was spinning. I hardly even knew how to walk at this point. A stranger with a guitar, who I believe had a gig at the bar, walked me back to my hotel. On the way back, I had fallen backwards onto the sidewalk cement and hit my head. We entered the wrong hotel. After finding the right hotel, hotel, he entered into the room with me, took my clothes off, and raped me. I could not move. Somehow I had also fallen off the bed during the act. I woke up the next day with him next to me in the bed. I immediately thought he was going to harm me or kill me, so I was nice to him. We went to “café” for some coffee. He left his guitar in my hotel room so he could be allowed back in to get it. I’m honestly surprised I survived this, and it could have gotten worse. I don’t remember how I eventually got away, but I only had the hotel room for so long. This could have been an even worse tragedy. I don’t believe that single females like myself are safe to go anywhere. I don’t go out anymore, even with friends. I stay home. It’s the only bit of safety I have. If you work at a bar or hotel, please please please SPEAK UP if you see something that’s not right. You could save a life.

Grounding activity
Find a comfortable place to sit. Gently close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths - in through your nose (count to 3), out through your mouth (count of 3). Now open your eyes and look around you. Name the following out loud:
5 – things you can see (you can look within the room and out of the window)
4 – things you can feel (what is in front of you that you can touch?)
3 – things you can hear
2 – things you can smell
1 – thing you like about yourself.
Take a deep breath to end.
From where you are sitting, look around for things that have a texture or are nice or interesting to look at.
Hold an object in your hand and bring your full focus to it. Look at where shadows fall on parts of it or maybe where there are shapes that form within the object. Feel how heavy or light it is in your hand and what the surface texture feels like under your fingers (This can also be done with a pet if you have one).
Take a deep breath to end.
Ask yourself the following questions and answer them out loud:
1. Where am I?
2. What day of the week is today?
3. What is today’s date?
4. What is the current month?
5. What is the current year?
6. How old am I?
7. What season is it?
Take a deep breath to end.
Put your right hand palm down on your left shoulder. Put your left hand palm down on your right shoulder. Choose a sentence that will strengthen you. For example: “I am powerful.” Say the sentence out loud first and pat your right hand on your left shoulder, then your left hand on your right shoulder.
Alternate the patting. Do ten pats altogether, five on each side, each time repeating your sentences aloud.
Take a deep breath to end.
Cross your arms in front of you and draw them towards your chest. With your right hand, hold your left upper arm. With your left hand, hold your right upper arm. Squeeze gently, and pull your arms inwards. Hold the squeeze for a little while, finding the right amount of squeeze for you in this moment. Hold the tension and release. Then squeeze for a little while again and release. Stay like that for a moment.
Take a deep breath to end.
