# How do I cope with feeling like I want a traumatic experience to happen again?

Topics:[Seeking help after trauma](/en/learn/topics/seeking-help-after-trauma)

Thank you for sharing this with us. I want you to know that what you're feeling is valid, and you're not alone in experiencing these complex emotions. These feelings you're describing are actually quite common among survivors of sexual violence and trauma, though they're rarely discussed openly.

It's not uncommon for survivors to have conflicting feelings, even ones that are confusing or distressing. Sometimes, the mind tries to make sense of trauma in ways that can seem contradictory or puzzling. Your brain and body may be trying to make sense of what happened by replaying or even seeking out similar situations. This can be a way of trying to gain control over an experience where you previously had none.

Feeling like you want it to happen again might be linked to a desire to regain control, to rewrite the experience, or to find meaning in it. Sometimes these feelings emerge as part of trauma bonding, where intense emotional experiences become linked with the traumatic event, creating confusing associations. Many survivors experience intrusive thoughts or fantasies about their trauma that can feel wanted or unwanted at different times. This doesn't mean you actually want to be harmed again - rather, it often reflects your mind's attempt to process and integrate what happened.

Coping with these emotions can be challenging, but it's important to be gentle with yourself. Working through these complex feelings with a trauma-informed therapist can be particularly helpful. Therapies like [EMDR](https://community.ourwave.org/_external/link?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmy.clevelandclinic.org%2Fhealth%2Ftreatments%2F22641-emdr-therapy&resourceId=non_specific&localeId=en&countryId=us&src=answer&questionId=8b267946-fc08-4972-b942-97460311643c&sig=87df9eaeae9b98ec14c91eafbe3044f579089321aeebf3357cd4b46ce26ac1ea) (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) or [trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy](https://community.ourwave.org/_external/link?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.psychologytoday.com%2Fus%2Ftherapy-types%2Ftrauma-focused-cognitive-behavior-therapy%3Fmsockid%3D1103576693d9679310b645d892bb66b2&resourceId=non_specific&localeId=en&countryId=us&src=answer&questionId=8b267946-fc08-4972-b942-97460311643c&sig=abf3f04d7318edb77cbce8e8bf077b6e0ad464b9256806437e04607c782604f4) are designed specifically to help process traumatic experiences and the complicated feelings that follow.

Consider reaching out to someone you trust, like a close friend or family member. Sharing your feelings can provide relief and help you feel less isolated. Professional support from a counselor or therapist who understands trauma might also be beneficial in helping you navigate these feelings.

In the meantime, practicing self-compassion is crucial. Remind yourself that these thoughts don't define you or your healing journey. Grounding techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness practices, or physical activity can help when these thoughts become overwhelming. Connecting with survivor support groups can also provide validation and perspective from others who may have experienced similar feelings.

Remember that healing isn't linear, and experiencing these complicated feelings doesn't mean you're moving backward. It's actually part of your mind processing what happened, and with support and compassion, these feelings typically become less intense over time. You deserve compassion, understanding, and care as you work through this. You're not alone, and there are people who want to help you through this process. Thank you for trusting us with this.

Grounding activity

Find a comfortable place to sit. Gently close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths - in through your nose (count to 3), out through your mouth (count of 3). Now open your eyes and look around you. Name the following out loud:

5 – things you can see (you can look within the room and out of the window)

4 – things you can feel (what is in front of you that you can touch?)

3 – things you can hear

2 – things you can smell

1 – thing you like about yourself.

Take a deep breath to end.

From where you are sitting, look around for things that have a texture or are nice or interesting to look at.

Hold an object in your hand and bring your full focus to it. Look at where shadows fall on parts of it or maybe where there are shapes that form within the object. Feel how heavy or light it is in your hand and what the surface texture feels like under your fingers (This can also be done with a pet if you have one).

Take a deep breath to end.

Ask yourself the following questions and answer them out loud:

1\. Where am I?

2\. What day of the week is today?

3\. What is today’s date?

4\. What is the current month?

5\. What is the current year?

6\. How old am I?

7\. What season is it?

Take a deep breath to end.

Put your right hand palm down on your left shoulder. Put your left hand palm down on your right shoulder. Choose a sentence that will strengthen you. For example: “I am powerful.” Say the sentence out loud first and pat your right hand on your left shoulder, then your left hand on your right shoulder.

Alternate the patting. Do ten pats altogether, five on each side, each time repeating your sentences aloud.

Take a deep breath to end.

Cross your arms in front of you and draw them towards your chest. With your right hand, hold your left upper arm. With your left hand, hold your right upper arm. Squeeze gently, and pull your arms inwards. Hold the squeeze for a little while, finding the right amount of squeeze for you in this moment. Hold the tension and release. Then squeeze for a little while again and release. Stay like that for a moment.

Take a deep breath to end.
